Shell Polymers: New Production Plant

Shell decided to expand their business by building a new polymer plant in Pennsylvania. The design objective for this project was to design a way for the employees at this plant to easily access high-level information about the plant as it is being built and once it is fully functioning. The solution was to design an interactive experience on a 70-75” touch screen located in Shell's office.

Monitoring Plant Progress

During this project, I designed and built prototypes for two versions of this experience. The first release was the project's main focus, which showcased data as the plant was being built. For the second release, I added features that displayed information about the plant in use. This included Plant Performance updates, Margin Data, Grade Production Schedule, and data about the plant’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Throughout the project, I worked with the client to incorporate feedback into multiple design iterations. On the dashboard, the user gets a clear overview of what is happening at the plant. Each panel is clickable, and once selected takes the user to a more detailed drill-down of that section. Some other sections included: Customers, Healthy & Safety, Weather Alerts, Sustainability, Logistics, Employee Recognition, and Construction Progress.

Pictured on the Construction Progress page are 3D renderings of the future polymer plant. Sections of the plant are color-coded to reflect the progress of the plant being built. By using the legend on the screen, the user can understand the construction status of each section. The user can also select a section of the plant for a more in-depth magnified view of that section and is presented with detailed descriptions of each subsection.
